English for Academic Purposes (EAP 1 and EAP 2)
Level: Upper Intermediate (EAP 1) and Advanced (EAP 2)
Duration: 10 - 20 weeks
Hours: 25 Hours per week

The EAP programs prepare students for further study in Australian high schools, foundation studies programs, TAFE courses and universities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

EAP 1 and EAP 2 are programs for Upper Intermediate (EAP 1) and Advanced students (EAP 2). After completing one of these programs, students will generally undertake an IELTS preparation program for 10 weeks.

Course Content

These programs are designed to assist students in developing their essay writing and critical thinking skills in order to present points of view in a way that meets with the cultural demands of an English speaking environment. The curriculum includes language development as well as study skills.

Writing skills for academic purposes:
  • Writing for specific purposes: summaries, essays, reports, term papers
  • Introduction to research, planning and editing skills
  • Presentation skills including using academic conventions
  • Note-taking

Reading skills for academic purposes:
  • Introduction to academic materials: articles and texts
  • Skimming, scanning and speed reading
  • Interpretation of graphs, diagrams and charts
  • Reading for main points and for specific information
  • Prediction
  • Understanding purpose and intent
  • Extension of vocabulary for further studies

Introduction to research skills:
  • Study techniques
  • Time use
  • Planning for a task
  • Assignment preparation
  • Listening skills for lectures and tutorials
  • Note-taking skills

Presentation skills:
  • Development of computer skills, including Word, spreadsheets and PowerPoint
  • Introduction to oral presentation skills
  • Oral presentations to groups in class

Intensive Academic Preparation
Levels: Upper Intermediate & Advanced
Duration: 10 weeks
Hours: 25 hours per week

The Intensive Academic Preparation (IAP) program is an advanced level intensive program designed to prepare students for university study in Australia.  Typically for students who have an IELTS score of 6.5 and are planning to undertake postgraduate study in Australia. 

Students will undertake a range of classroom activities and independent research tasks.

Course Content

The course focuses on developing English language and study skills including:

Listening
  • Students develop their ability to identify and analyse issues and gather important information through listening and note-taking exercises based on lectures, seminars, videos, tapes and tutorial style presentations.

Speaking

  • by planning, researching and developing material students will be given opportunities to further improve their seminar presentation skills.
  • tasks are provided that require students to confidently express, explain and support a point of view related to a given topic.
  • each student will make two oral presentations; the second will be a seminar presentation on the major paper developed during weeks 6,7,8 and 9.

Writing
  • students will be required to write in a number of writing styles, including narrative, argumentative and analytical.
  • students will also be required to summarise, paraphrase, organise, self edit material and correctly acknowledge reference information obtained from a range of sources.
  • the application of appropriate academic skills will form the focus of major oral and written research projects. 

Reading
  • reading and analysis of a range of authentic reading materials, will improve general academic reading skills such as predicting, skimming, scanning, identifying key words and key topics.
