This University of Melbourne coursework program offers awards at three levels:

• Master of English as an International Language


• Graduate Diploma in English as an International Language 


• Graduate Certificate in English as an International Language

This is a Faculty of Education program that is delivered primarily at the University of Melbourne's Hawthorn campus.




English is becoming a prominent language in communication for governments, corporations and in fields of research and development. Specialists who are proficient in English are sought by employers who need to communicate effectively in the global market.

This program gives graduates the skills and confidence required to meet the growing international need for professionals who are capable of evaluating, analysing and presenting materials in English with confidence and style.



Flexible Study
Students can complete four semesters for a Masters Degree or exit earlier with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma.

Program Focus
The Graduate Program in English as an International Language concentrates on the development of high-level language skills and knowledge and is an excellent choice for students working or studying in international contexts.

Career prospects

Graduates of the program tell us their career opportunities have been greatly broadened by the confidence and knowledge gained in the courses. Some graduates have started their own businesses, while others enjoy careers in international companies, academia or government.

 

Academic goals

The Graduate Program in English as an International Language can also be a pathway to other university courses. Students who have completed the Graduate Diploma in English as an International Language have been accepted into graduate studies in fields such as:

Entry Requirements

The program is only available to students for whom English is a second or foreign language.

Applicants must have:

• a recognised bachelor degree, or equivalent qualification, PLUS
• an IELTS score of minimum 5.5 with no band lower than 5.0, or equivalent or TOEFL 523 paper/193 computer-based AND 4.0 in the essay writing

Only students with an average score of at least 65% in the first year of the course will be permitted to enrol in the second year.
