Introducing SCOPE: Sports, Cultural, Outdoor Programs and Excursions

A key feature of the range of services offered by Hawthorn is the Sport, Culture, Outdoor Programs and Excursions program. Known as SCOPE, this program is designed to help students get the most from their English studies and time in Melbourne. Through the SCOPE program students can take part in a range of social activities, make new friends, meet Australians, join local clubs and gain the confidence needed to succeed in their English language learning.

The philosophy of SCOPE is 'Real English in Real Situations'.

Hawthorn students receive the benefits of having a full time social coordinator on staff to arrange social and recreational activities for students held after class and on weekends.

On weekends the SCOPE Coordinator arranges for students to take part in optional trips to mountains, beaches, festivals or horse riding.

There are also a range of after class activities for students to choose from. They include:

• Movie club: students and staff see movies and enjoy dinner while discussing the films.
• Music club: Students join teachers each week to play and perform together.
• After class, students may also take part in optional classes and clubs that will further enhance English language learning and confidence. These classes and clubs include debating, conversation, Improving Listening through songs, TOEIC and TOEFL test preparation, Music club, Cooking Clubs, Indoor Soccer, Basketball, and Drama Club.

Participation in any SCOPE activity is free of charge with the exception of entry fees at tourist attractions and cinemas. Transport is provided using the Centre's bus.

The SCOPE program also contributes to course curriculum. Once every five weeks all Hawthorn classes take an excursion. The excursions are a required component of class activities. Excursions have an educational focus. Destinations (depending on the weather and availability) may include Healesville Sanctuary, Sovereign Hill (historic gold mining town), Sorrento (beaches) and wineries. Active excursions such as golf lessons are also sometimes included.
