Hawthorn English Language School - Melbourne
Frequently Asked Questions About Homestay
Could you please book me a room on-campus?
Hawthorn-Melbourne does not have on-campus accommodation. Most students choose to live in a homestay, or in shared accommodation. The Accommodation Office can arrange homestay accommodation for students or temporary accommodation.

Can a relative or friend also stay with me in my homestay?
It is unlikely that the homestay host will be able to accommodate both the student and other members of the family or guests. The Accommodation Office is happy to assist in finding a suitable hotel or Bed & Breakfast nearby for family members. Students must get permission from the host before inviting somebody to stay with them in the homestay.

Why can't I have my homestay details 4 weeks before I arrive?
Most hosts have students with them all year round. The host can only inform the Accommodation Office that there is a vacancy when their current student gives notice that they will be leaving. Staff in the Accommodation Office usually only know which homestays are available one or two weeks before each student intake. In most cases, it t is difficult to provide homestay details much earlier than that.

Why can't I have details of my homestay before my flight details are available?
The Accommodation Office needs the flight details in order to organise airport pick-up and confirm arrival dates with the host.

Can you find me a homestay within walking distance of the campus?
Our homestay homes are spread throughout Hawthorn and the nearby suburbs. Students usually need to travel a short distance to school on public transport. The campus is well serviced by public transport (train, tram and bus). Homestays are generally no more than 50 minutes travel time from school with the average being 35 minutes.

Can you find me a homestay with a typical Australian family?
There is really no such thing as a 'typical' Australian family’ or even a 'typical' homestay host. Australians include people from all over the world both recently arrived and here for generations. Homestay hosts reflect Melbourne's diverse community. A third of hosts are single people. Another third are single parent families. The important thing is that all homestay hosts are English speaking and experienced with international students.

Can you find me a homestay with an internet connection?
Not all Australian homes have an internet connection.  Students can use the internet free of charge at school.

Can somebody pick me up at the airport?
We can arrange for our airport pick-up service TOGOTO Australia to pick you up at the airport. The fee for this service is $130. Students who do not require homestay or accommodation, but would like airport reception, need to complete the Accommodation Request Form to supply full flight details and the address they wish to be taken to when they arrive in Melbourne.

Please give any flight changes directly to TOGOTO Australia and the Accommodation Office.  If TOGOTO is not informed in time to cancel the service, a fee of $100 will be charged for any further airport reception request.

If you prefer to make your own way from the airport, you can take a taxi from outside the airport but they are quite expensive. It will most likely cost more than $70 to get to Hawthorn from the airport and more if your accommodation is further away.

There is no public transport to Hawthorn from the airport, however, there is a regular bus service from the airport to the city of Melbourne (Southern Cross Station). You can then take public transport from the city (Southern Cross Station) to your accommodation.

Can somebody take me back to the airport when I leave Melbourne?
When leaving Melbourne, the trip back to the airport can be arranged through the Accommodation Office, providing full flight details are known.  This service is not free. The student must pay the fee the Driver, on the day of the trip.
