On arrival at Hawthorn-Melbourne, the Accommodation Office can provide information about renting a house or flat. Please be aware that most properties in Melbourne are rented with no furniture. You will need to sign a rental contract (lease) for either 6 or 12 months or more, and pay for the connection of gas and electricity and possibly internet and telephone.

Renting a house or flat is generally only suitable for students staying longer than 6 months who have a lump sum of money to pay towards establishment costs and who are ready for independent living in a foreign country. Please note, that it is not possible for staff from the Accommodation Office to inspect rental properties or give students legal advice on on leases.

Some students prefer the community atmosphere and facilities associated with student hostels and student apartments in larger complexes. While these rental agreements may also include meals, they are often very small and comparatively, quite expensive.
