Hawthorn - Melbourne offers General English programs suitable for students at all levels. The classes develop all four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

The General English curriculum focuses on oral communication skills, fluency and accuracy using spoken and written language and developing the skills and confidence to use English outside the classroom in real situations.

An innovative program of homework and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) enhances the curriculum. Students are also encouraged to develop their English skills beyond the classroom environment by becoming involved in after class electives and weekend social activities.*

Course Content

Course content includes the following:

Listening

• Understanding Australian speakers of English
• Listening for general meaning
• Listening for specific meaning

Speaking

• Communicating confidently with English language speakers
• Expressing ideas, attitudes and opinions
• Pronunciation practice

Reading

• Reading a variety of written texts including books, articles, magazines and newspapers

Writing

• Construct written texts including essays, reports and letters

Grammar

• Develop a sound understanding of English grammar
• Develop accuracy in spoken and written grammar
